10 mistakes businesses from Chișinău make with Instagram

An honest list of mistakes I see daily from local Moldovan businesses on Instagram. Plus how to fix them without spending a cent.

10 mistakes businesses from Chișinău make with Instagram

Last week I walked into a cafe in Botanica. Good coffee, elegant design, perfect atmosphere. I asked for their Instagram. Looked at it. Last post: 11 months ago. A story with a cat on the sidewalk.

This isn't an isolated case. It's the RULE for 80% of small businesses in Chișinău. And no, the problem ISN'T the Instagram algorithm. The problem is the list below.

Let's go through them one by one, with concrete examples I've seen this very week.

1. Posting only when they have nothing else to do

Average Chișinău business profile: 3 posts in March, then silence until August. Then 1 desperate reel "LAST DAY OFFER!!!". Then silence again.

Instagram's algorithm works on CONSISTENCY. Want reach? You post at least 3 times a week, month after month. It's not magic, it's discipline. And no, that doesn't mean spammy bad content — it means having an editorial plan.

2. Photos taken with phone in bad lighting

I saw a beauty salon downtown — real services costing 50-100€. Their photos: at 10 PM, under yellow ceiling lamp light, with a haircut photo that looks like a windblown disaster.

No, you don't need to invest 1000€ in equipment. Natural window light (around noon, sunny days), a clean background and a 3-year-old iPhone do more than a badly-shot studio session.

3. Never responding to comments or messages

Last week I messaged 5 salons in Chișinău: "hi, I want an appointment on X date, is it available?". Average response time: 2 days. 2 salons didn't respond at all.

An unanswered comment is like a customer walking into your shop and nobody greeting them. In 2026, Instagram IS your shop. Reply within 2-3 hours, always.

4. Bio: just emojis and business name

"☕ Cafe Botanica ☕ 📍 Chișinău 💖". This tells me NOTHING about the business. What do you sell? Why should I follow? Where do I find you? What's your unique offer?

A good bio includes: 1) what you do (specific), 2) for whom (target audience), 3) what makes you different, 4) where to act (link, form, phone). In 150 characters.

5. Same Canva filters for every post

A trend pops up: "I'll make all my posts with the pink template with bold text". A year goes by. All posts look identical. Nobody scrolls and stops anymore.

Visual variety is CRUCIAL for engagement. Alternate between: posts with real photography, posts with large text/quotes, carousel posts with information, reels, behind-the-scenes stories. Never 2 identical-looking posts in a row.

6. Zero stories, zero Reels

Brands that understand Instagram in 2026 make MORE stories/day than posts/month. That's not an exaggeration — it's Meta's own data.

Stories maintain reach. Reels bring NEW followers (the most important ones, if you want to grow). Feed posts are archive, for those who already follow you. All 3 together = complete strategy.

7. Useless hashtags: #love #happy #life

#love has 2 billion posts. Do you want to appear there? No. You want to appear in #cafebotanica (50 posts), #coffeechișinău (3K posts), #moldovancafe (1K posts). Niche, local, specific hashtags.

Simple rule: 3-5 local hashtags + 3-5 niche hashtags + 2-3 brand-specific hashtags. Total 8-13. Not 30 random copy-paste ones.

8. Posting what they want, not what audience wants

The biggest mistake I see: "today is our employee's birthday!" with cake photo. Or "happy March 8th!" with generic flower. Or "our team at team building!".

YOUR audience cares about YOU only if you solve their problem, entertain them or inspire them. Posts about yourself for the sake of it = 0 engagement. Make it about THEM — the client, their pain, your solution.

9. Every post has "DM us" CTA

"For details, DM!" on every reel, every post, every story. You're losing 90% of potential inquiries because people don't have time/patience to ask.

Put INFORMATION in the post: price, location, hours, conditions. And the CTA should be clear and diverse: 'book at www.x.md', 'call X', 'link in bio'. Don't make the customer do extra work.

10. Measuring absolutely nothing

Question: which was your best post in the last month (by engagement)? Average answer: "I don't know". That's the tragedy.

Instagram Insights (free) shows you: which posts worked, which hours catch your audience best, which hashtags bring reach. 10 minutes of weekly analysis = 3x more efficient. Nothing complicated.

How to fix them all

The best way to avoid all 10 mistakes is to treat Instagram like any serious channel of your business: with a plan, with discipline, with measurement. NOT like something you post 'when you have time'.

If you don't have the time, energy or it's simply not your expertise — that's exactly where we come in. At Vilm Group, we manage SMM for brands in Chișinău, Moldova and Romania, with packages from 200€/month. No copy-paste, everything personalized.
